Introduction

Here in Coventry we are exceeding the National Learning Targets in key areas. Coventry's success in this field can be accounted for by a number of factors – not least the two excellent universities within the city.

The foundations, though, are set in the primary schools, where the Key Stage targets are consistently being met, and where class sizes are considerably smaller than the regional and national average.

Some key facts on rising achievement in Coventry over a ten year period:

The proportion of students with the equivalent of five good GCSEs is up from 4.3% (1244 out of 3362) in 1994 to 45.5% (1663 out of 3655) in 2004.

The proportion of students aged 18 achieving the equivalent of two A levels is up from 62% (541 out of 878) to 78% in 2003 (908 out of 1163).

Over 95% of young people have gained at least one A-level pass grade in 2004.
