Latest figures show Coventry's students have achieved a record high for GCSEs in 2009.

For the third year running, early indications show record GCSE results as Coventry students achieved a new city record. For the first time ever, more than 70 percent of 16 year olds have achieved 5 high grade GCSE passes A* - C, this is nearly a 10% point increase since last year. Furthermore more than 47% (a 5.5% point increase) achieved 5+ A* - C including English and maths.

  • % five or more A* - C (including English and Maths): a 5.5 point rise from 41.8% to 47.3%.

  • % five or more A* - C (in any subject): a 9.3% point rise from 60.7% to 70.0%

  • % five or more A* - C: a 0.7 point rise from 91.3% from 92.1%

  • % A* - C in maths: a 4.4 point rise from 51.3% to 55.7%. This has significantly closed the gap on the national figure which only increased by 1 point.

  • % A* - C in English: a 7.5 point increase from 52.0% to 59.5%. Again this has significantly closed the gap on the national figure which decreased by 0.2 of a point.

All of the Coventry schools who were below 30% at 5+ A* - C (incl English and maths) in 2007 have exceeded the 2011 30% floor targets two years ahead of time. This group of schools have achieved exceptional results this year with an average rate of increase of 9.3% in this measure.

*The results are provisional at the time of going to press and are subject to confirmation in the autumn along with the results of vocational qualifications.
